A nail portfolio app helps clients browse your work and choose a design. A booking app handles appointments. Some businesses need both, while others need only one. This guide compares the tools by the job you need.
Disclosure: I work on Nailfolio, which appears in this comparison. I checked the other products against their public pages on 30 October 2026. Features, availability and fees can vary by country, so use the linked vendor pages for current terms.
Start with the job you need
- Online booking and reminders: compare booking tools such as Booksy and Fresha.
- A client-facing portfolio: look for a gallery that helps people find work by the details they care about, not just a list of recent photos.
- New-client discovery: consider your own social channels and booking marketplaces. Their reach and fees depend on your location and how a client finds you.
- Client history: check whether notes and past work are private to you, shared with a team, or attached to the booking profile.
Nail portfolio and booking apps compared
| Tool | Main job | Shortlist it when |
|---|---|---|
| Nailfolio | Portfolio and appointment preparation | Clients should browse your work by design details before they visit |
| Booksy | Booking and marketplace discovery | You want a calendar, client management and a marketplace profile |
| Fresha | Booking, payments and marketplace discovery | You want booking tools with plans priced by bookable team member |
| GlossGenius | Booking, payments and a branded booking site | You work in the US and want those tools in one service |
| Vagaro | Booking and salon management | You want a broad beauty and wellness platform |
| Publishing work and reaching followers | You need a social channel, not a searchable client gallery | |
| Sharing and finding inspiration | You want a source of ideas, not a record of your own services |
Nailfolio: a portfolio and client-preparation tool
The public profile shows selected pinned work. After you accept a client's connection request, they can browse the full gallery and filter by color, length and tagged traits such as technique, finish, decoration and style. A connected client can collect photos in an Inspiration Session, add one note for the session and send it to you. Shared sessions remain available for 14 days.
The client card stores visit history, notes and result photos for the stylist who owns it; it is not a salon-wide shared record. See Nailfolio for stylists and the current plans and limits. Client accounts are free. The stylist product is paid, with a limited Free Demo for trying it.
Nailfolio does not book appointments or provide a calendar or booking reminders. Keep the booking tool that works for you. The Android app is in preparation; no release date has been announced.
- Best fit: a stylist who wants clients to choose from their portfolio before the appointment and needs a private client history.
- Check first: whether you also need a booking tool, and whether the current plan limits fit your gallery and client list.
Booksy and Fresha: booking first
Booksy combines online booking with a consumer marketplace, calendar and client-management tools. Its optional Boost and fee terms vary by country. Read the local pricing page before relying on marketplace acquisition.
Fresha combines booking, payments, client management and marketplace discovery. Plans are priced by bookable team member. Its Marketplace new-client fee is a one-time charge tied to how a client discovered the business; returning clients are not charged that fee. Read the current local pricing and fee rules.
Both are worth comparing when appointments, reminders or new-client discovery are the priority. If clients need to search your nail work by color, length or style, check that exact flow in each product before moving your portfolio.
GlossGenius and Vagaro: broad salon platforms
GlossGenius is a US booking and payment platform with a branded booking website and client tools. Vagaro offers booking and salon-management features across beauty and wellness. Compare their local availability, team setup, payment terms and data export before changing systems.
These platforms may suit a business that wants booking and client operations together. They are not substitutes for checking how clients browse nail designs in your own account.
Instagram and Pinterest: useful channels, different jobs
Instagram can help people discover your work and contact you. Its profile does not give clients a portfolio filter for nail color, length or style. The regular feed is ranked and may include recommendations, so it is not a dependable chronological list. See Meta's explanation of how it ranks content.
Pinterest is useful for collecting ideas, but a reference image may show another stylist's work on different nails. Use it to learn what a client likes, then compare that with examples from your own portfolio.
Which combination makes sense?
Your booking tool works well. Keep it. Add a searchable portfolio only if clients struggle to choose from your real work or you need a better record of past designs.
Most new clients find you through social media. Keep publishing there. Make the next step clear: a booking link for appointments and a portfolio link for design choices.
You mainly need bookings and reminders. Compare Booksy, Fresha and local alternatives using your team size, payment method and the way clients find you. Check fees in your country before switching.
You run a salon team. Check who can see client notes, who owns each client record and whether the public gallery identifies the stylist behind each design. Nailfolio's Studio plan separates a shared public profile from a stylist's private client card.
Can Instagram replace a nail portfolio?
It can show your work and help clients find you. It does not let a client filter your own nail photos by color, length and style, so it may not be enough when people need to compare specific designs.
Do I need a separate portfolio app if I already use Booksy?
Only if you need a different portfolio or client-history workflow. Check Booksy's current profile features first; a separate portfolio can sit alongside the booking calendar.
Is there a free nail portfolio app?
Instagram is free to use as a social channel. Nailfolio has a limited Free Demo for stylists, while client use is free. Check the pricing page for current limits and paid plans.
